IT at the University of Chester

This page guides you through the essential steps for getting started with university IT systems and services. You’ll learn how to access your UoC account, connect to campus Wi-Fi, change your password, and set up multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Your UoC Account and Email Address

Once your place is confirmed, you’ll receive a welcome email from the University. This will include:

  • Your student ID number
  • Your university email address (e.g. studentnumber@chester.ac.uk)
  • A temporary password

Once you’ve completed online enrolment, you’ll be able to access your UoC account and university email. Your email account will remain active for 18 months after your course ends.

The University’s primary method of communication with you throughout your studies will be via emails sent to your student email address. Please regularly review your inbox and emails for important information and updates which might affect your studies. You can access your email via the Outlook web app via the Email tile on the UoC app, or by going to https://outlook.office.com/

Changing your Password

Your initial password is set by the University and will be included in your welcome email. Each student receives a unique, randomly generated password - please keep this secure and do not share it with anyone.

Once you've completed online enrolment, you'll be prompted to change your password. To help protect your account, we strongly recommend updating your password as soon as possible.

Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

To enhance security at the University many of our systems are configured to require the use of Multifactor Authentication (MFA). In order to access these systems, you need to provide your username and password as a first step and then complete an additional verification step to complete the sign-in. For our systems the additional verification functionality is provided by an app named Microsoft Authenticator which you can install on your smartphone or tablet.

To help provide the highest level of security for your account - and to ensure you are ready to commence your studies - we highly recommend you set up MFA at this point by following one of the guides available here.

Single Sign-On

The university uses a Single Sign-On system, giving you access to all core services with just one account. This includes the Portal, Moodle, Microsoft 365, and more. You’ll learn more about these platforms during your induction sessions.

University Wi-Fi

The University of Chester Wi-Fi (UoC WiFi) is available across all our campuses and buildings.  To connect, simply use your UoC IT account username and password (the same details you use to log into Portal or your email).

Follow our step-by-step guide to connect to UoC WiFi.

University Libraries

The University of Chester has numerous libraries across its different campuses, and all staff and students at the University are welcome to use any of the libraries.  Further information can be found here.

Printing, Scanning and Photocopying

The University has its own multi-functional devices (MFDs) called Ricoh. If you need to scan a document to work on your computer, we have a scan to OneDrive feature which you can use for free. If you want to print or photocopy a document, you just need to add credit to your Chester account via the Chester App. We have a 'Bring your Own Device policy' for printing whereby you can print from your personal computer to a University Ricoh MFD, or you can always sign into one of the many open-access computers we have on our different sites and print from there.

For more bulk printing requests such as dissertations or large posters, we have a dedicated Print Unit team who can help you at very competitive rates.

OneDrive Cloud Storage

All students get 1TB of secure OneDrive storage to back up and manage files. This is accessible throughout your time at the university.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is our go-to platform for instant messaging, and staying connected with staff and students. It’s also used to receive updates from your course team and access module-related information.

Choosing a Laptop for University

A reliable laptop is an essential tool for your studies, allowing you to work independently, access learning resources, and complete assignments efficiently.

Devices to Avoid

To ensure your laptop meets the needs of your academic work, we recommend avoiding the following:

  • Chromebooks
These devices are not compatible with much of the software used in university courses and are not suitable for higher-level study.
  • Laptops running Windows S Mode
Windows S Mode limits the installation of required applications. Devices running in this mode are generally not appropriate for university-level work.
  • Devices with limited storage
Storage below 256GB is often insufficient for academic use, especially when installing software and storing files.
  • Older operating systems
Your device should be capable of running at least Windows 10. If your current laptop does not support this, you may need to consider upgrading or replacing it.

Minimum Recommended Specifications

For most students (particularly those using Microsoft Word, referencing software, and web browsers) the following specifications are recommended as a minimum:

  • Windows 11
  • Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5
  • 8GB
  • 256GB SSD
  • Integrated/onboard graphics

Higher Performance Requirements

Students on courses involving tasks such as programming, CAD, or graphic design may require a more powerful device:

  • Windows 11
  • Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7
  • 16GB
  • 1TB SSD
  • Dedicated graphics card capable of running specialised software
