Biography

In my service public health career I held a variety of specialist public health roles: including Consultant in Communicable Disease Control in Halton, Director of Public Health in Sefton, and Director of Cheshire and Merseyside Health Protection Unit. I retired from fulltime-practice to purse my academic roles. I later worked part-time as a Locum Consultant in Telford and Wrekin, and Honorary Consultant in Public Health in Shropshire. I gave up my GMC license to retire from practice in 2017 but remained on the GMC specialist register. Since 2018 I have focussed on carrying out a variety of part-time academic roles, mostly linked to the University of Chester.

Teaching and Supervision

Teaching and Supervision: I am a Visiting/Honorary Professor of Public Health at University of Chester. I began teaching with the University of Chester in 2014 and led the MPH for two cohorts at the Shropshire Campus between 2015 and 2017. I have held various part-time responsibilities at Chester including as Module Leader for MPH Programme, covering Communicable Diseases in Public Health (PH7018) and also the Economics of Health module (PH7020). I stepped back from module leadership but I have maintained some regular lecturing MPH input and offer advice and support to newer lecturers. Since October 2024 I have been engaged in teaching with Chester Medical School, leading on the Social and Population Perspectives Theme for the first intake to the new MB,ChB programme. I also retain wider honorary academic links, including lecturing at Liverpool John Moores University as Adjunct Professor of Public Health. Subjects include housing and health, air pollution, and risk communication. I have since 2020 guided some Young Professionals in their investigations and academic writing as part of my links to the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European region (ASPHER). I also offer examining support to Keele University (external examiner BSc Public Health) and University of Liverpool (examiner Health Protection Module of MPH).

Research and Knowledge Exchange

Research and Knowledge Exchange: My academic research interests included forms of CPD undertaken by professionals. I have a long-standing interest in health protection applied research. This includes communicable disease outbreaks and environmental incidents. I became active within the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) in 2020 during the pandemic. This focuses on our interests within the ASPHER Public Health Emergencies Task Force (formerly COVID-19 Task Force). My interests included pandemic epidemiology, assessing health inequalities, and guiding on future professional competencies.
