Gabriela – My Top Reasons to Study Bioveterinary Science
Find out more about studying in the School of Natural Sciences from second year Bioveterinary Science student Gabriela.
Hi, I’m Gabriela and I am in my second year of the course and my third year here at Chester, after doing a foundation year.
The Bioveterinary Science course is enjoyable to me because there is a lot of lab work. This is very broad and ranges from dissection to exploring questions, such as working out whether a bacteria is aerobic or anaerobic.
As a Bioveterinary student we use the Thomas building quite a lot for practicals. Staff members are so easy to talk to, and whenever you need help to understand something, they are always there to give you guidance. We also get to know the lab technicians, who help us with some of the tasks.
The topics I have most enjoyed have included reproduction, animal behaviour and physiology, because we have had field trips, like visiting Cogent Farm.
Here are my top reasons to study Bioveterinary Science:
Reason One: Well-equipped Laboratories
The School offers a range of resources, including well-equipped laboratories, access to cutting-edge research facilities, and expert guidance from highly qualified academic and technical staff.
Reason Two: Interactive Sessions
When you are in a lecture it's not always the lecturer talking at you. There are some interactive parts where there could be a question and we have to research and upload the answers, before having a discussion on it.
Students benefit from small group tutorials, mentoring schemes, and regular feedback that help to build confidence and deepen their understanding of complex scientific concepts.
Reason Three: Support
There is always an opportunity to develop your academic skills, and these are posted through the weekly Biovet Bulletin. Some of the things being highlighted are jobs that we can apply to with our degree. Our Academic Skills team are here to help us with any academic queries.
Dedicated careers advisers help students prepare for roles in research, veterinary practice, biotechnology, and related industries through workshops, placements, and networking opportunities.
For my future career, I would like to become a veterinary surgeon, or maybe even a lab technician for a company that deals with genes or parasites.
Reason Four: Chester
My favourite part of Chester is walking the walls, which lets you explore the city’s rich history while enjoying great views and fresh air. The walls date back to Roman times and circle the whole city, passing landmarks like the Cathedral and River Dee. It’s a relaxing and scenic way to see Chester from a unique perspective
Reason Five: Socialising
Friends that I have made come from Woman's Rugby Union, and the people that I have encountered as a Student Ambassador. The University’s Women’s Rugby Union team welcomes players of all experience levels and offers regular training sessions, and competitive matches against other universities. Playing for the women’s rugby team is not just about sport. Beyond the game, it provides a great social community where members build confidence, fitness, and lifelong friendships.
In my role as a Student Ambassador I am able to talk about my degree to people, and give people tours of the campus. I like that you get to meet a range of people who you wouldn’t otherwise meet.
For social events the Chester Students Union do a great job of putting up and advertising so many events, for example Chestival, bingo nights and freshers’ week.
Tips for Finding out More
I would say that if you are inclined to come to University, Chester has a podcast and lots of information about what to expect and I am on one of the episodes! I also recommend speaking to our ambassadors at open days, to get an idea from a student perspective, as well as what some of the staff members provide.
