Chester Law School- Combining History and Opportunity All in One Place
We outline how Chester Law School is a prime study location with local industry connections that enhance your studies, along with how Chester as a city is steeped in historically significant law touchstones.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to study law in a city that brings together rich history, exciting opportunities, and real-world legal experience, all in one place?
Choosing where to study can be a big decision. Not only is it about the course, but it’s also the environment you’ll be in, who you’ll learn from and the opportunities that could shape your future.
At Chester, our Law School offers all of this and much more. From expert academic teaching to hands-on experience, you’ll study in the heart of one of the UK’s most historic yet vibrant cities. With its close connections to local law firms and a network of legal professionals, it’s the perfect location to begin your legal career.
Pathways to suit your ambitions
Whether you aspire to become a solicitor, barrister, or apply your legal knowledge in business or criminal justice, you’ll find a course that aligns with your interests.
The Law LLB offers a strong foundation in legal theory and practice, covering core subjects like contract, public, and property law, with the option to study specialist modules in year three. Law with Business and Commerce blends legal study with commercial awareness, equipping you with the skills for a career in compliance, trade or private enterprise. Alternatively, Law with Criminal Justice offers an insight into crime, punishment and reform through both legal and criminological perspectives.
A prime study location
Based in the Wheeler building, Chester Law School is just a stone’s throw away from the city centre and overlooks the scenic River Dee. Inside, you’ll find everything you need, including a dedicated mooting (mock trial) room, seminar rooms, and study spaces for independent and group work.
One of the most unique advantages of studying law here? You’ll be next door to the Crown Court and down the street from the Magistrates’ Court, placing you close to where real legal proceedings happen every day. The Magistrates’ Court handles less serious offences and is often the first hearing for criminal cases. Meanwhile, most serious offences are sent to the Crown Court, which deals with more complex trials and sentencing. Few law schools in the country offer students which such proximity to active courtrooms.
The city of Chester itself also offers a beautiful backdrop. The Roman amphitheatre, quaint coffee shops, cobbled streets, and picturesque riverside views, are all within walking distance of where you will be studying.
Local industry connections that matter
Chester Law School is deeply embedded into the region’s legal landscape. Our strong relationships with local professionals and close links to legal firms mean that you’ll have access to a wide network, leading to valuable experiences and guest lectures from practicing lawyers and judges.
A recent highlight was our end-of-term celebration evening, which brought together students, academic staff and our partners to recognise achievements and celebrate another year of collaboration. Events like this help to strengthen professional relationships as you take your first steps towards a legal career. Make sure to keep up with our events and employability-enhancing sessions that are part of your studies by following our Instagram or LinkedIn.
Our Legal Advice Clinic also offers students the opportunity to give back to the local community and gain practical legal experience, by working alongside fellow students and with clients on live cases. You can hear more about this work directly from our students in this video.
History of Law in Chester
Once a Roman fortress town known as Deva Vitrix, Chester still has many of its ancient features, including the castle, Tudor style buildings, and almost complete city walls.
Chester Crown Court has been the setting for some of the nation’s most significant trials, including the recent acquittal of professional footballer Benjamin Mendy, and the sentencing of former MP, Mike Amesbury. This adds an important layer of context to your studies. It also shows how this city is a place where law is rooted in real stories, historic decisions, and the evolution of our legal system.
In addition to the Crown and Magistrates’ Courts, the city is also home to other interesting legal landmarks. The Consistory Court, which can be found inside Chester Cathedral, is one of the UK’s oldest and best-preserved examples, connecting your learning to centuries of legal history.
See if you can also spot the Bridge of Sighs during your walks through the city. This former route connected the Northgate gaol, the site of many public executions, to a chapel which allowed condemned prisoners to receive their last rites without the risk of escaping!
